(*Obviously we can't guarantee everyone will fix it faster than getting pizza delivered. Some lucky people live right next to pizza places.)

Why It's Important to Update Kodi Regularly

Not everybody is nice on the internet. Some people, for example, try insert viruses onto your computer by exploiting weaknesses in software. Keeping everything up to date is one of the best ways to foil the hackers.

When you update Kodi, you get all the benefits of the Kodi team's experience in fixing bugs, security concerns, and updated features.

How to Tell What Version of Kodi You're Running

Before you start updating, check what version of Kodi you have. If you are updating from v.16 to v.17, do a clean install instead of an update. That will help prevent any issues you have with the new version.

Checking your version of Kodi will also help diagnose any issues with the app crashing.

  1. Open Kodi and click the Settings icon (the gear)
  2. Open System Information
  3. On the bottom right corner of your screen, there is a section titled "Version info," under that, you will find your build. It should say Kodi 17.6 if you are up to date.
  4. If it doesn't say "Kodi 17.6," then you need to update Kodi

What to Do If Your Firestick Crashes When You Try to Open Kodi

Don't worry. This is fixable. It could be a couple of issues. You could have updated Kodi with an incompatible skin. You might have an ancient version of Kodi. Also, there could just be one of those weird software bugs that pop up occasionally.

You will need to do a clean install, regardless of the problem. Cleaning everything Kodi related off of the Firestick then reinstalling from scratch should do the trick.

One internet hero created an app that lets you keep Kodi up to date without going through most of the steps you needed to install it in the first place. It's super easy.

  2. Go to Add-ons on the side menu
  3. In the Add-ons screen, click the open cardboard box icon (upper left)
  4. Select "Install from repository"
  5. Select "Kodi Add-on repository"
  6. In the Program add-ons, scroll down to Kodi Android Installer
  7. Install it
  8. Go back to Program Add-ons -> Open Kodi Android Installer
